Remember when drunk men were the most exciting part of going home?

The second time I went home wasn’t nearly as last minute or quite as stressful as my initial trip in October. When I went home for Thanksgiving, I also took the train, but there were several key differences.

For one, I boarded it in Amherst, not Springfield. This is geographically closer, but it still involved a rather long commute on the Pioneer Valley Transport Authority, and a walk of about half a mile.

But the better difference was the company — this time I had someone to share the ride with. And flying out of New Haven, CT, I didn’t have to deal with New York public transit. I’m still not sure how I survived that particular journey, to be honest. A number of people warned me I might die.

This trip could have been far more convenient, but I don’t recall anything horrible happening. New Haven is small enough that the train station and the airport are only a couple miles apart; a taxi cab is the best way to get between them. That said, I’m a thoroughly suburban girl, and the only other time I can remember taking a taxi was years ago in Chicago. I was so young, I’m sure I only remember it because it took us to the Rainforest Cafe.

Still, New Haven is one of those airports that is so small they only have about ten flights per day total. There are five or six gates, but flights appear to only go out of gate four, so I assume the others are just for decoration. It’s nice to fly out of there (gorgeous view of the ocean as you take off and land), but decent prices are really hit and miss.

I had another ridiculously early flight to come home that time too, but it was made more interesting by the man passed out drunk flat on his face next to my gate in Detroit. I’m still not sure how he got there, but his predicament brightened my morning, since everyone, including airport personnel, was acting as if this was normal at 6 am on a Sunday.

Stay tuned for my Winter Break Adventure of 2010! It was so eventful I might have to split it into two parts.
